Zeena Mustafa Saleem is a contemporary impressionist painter who lives and works in Toronto, Canada. A native of Baghdad - her vibrant paintings refract her Iraqi roots through a Western influenced lens. Her singular point of view emerges from the pain and joy of the immigrant while expressing the vibrant spirit and atmosphere of her Iraqi roots. In her life-long pursuit of truth through art, Zeena has explored feminine self-expression through the use of oils, pastels, acrylics and sketches. Self-taught, Zeena began painting as a means of dealing with uprootedness and political upheaval. In her early work, womanhood, love, longing and alienation serve as her major themes. Throughout Zeena’s impressionistic oeuvre can be found re occurring images of the female form, cats, umbrellas and intertwined lovers, while continuously experimenting with the use of color, light, and composition.
